Nokia Moves Into Virtual Reality with 360-3D OZO Camera

Posted on

We haven’t heard much from Nokia since the $7.2B Microsoft buyout in 2014, until now. Their latest project, a 360-3D camera, called OZO.

Instead of creating yet another VR HMD, Nokia has decided to focus on the capturing aspect of VR. Their target audience will be professional content creators. Imagine watching a Movie, a live concert, or a Broadway play in 360 degrees 3D. You’ll be inside the movie, at the concert, in the audience.

The Nokia OZO will capture stereoscopic 3D video with the help of 8 cameras, and it will capture spatial audio through 8 integrated microphones. Software created specifically for the Nokia OZO will make it possible to watch the 360-3D footage, live.

You’ll be able to enjoy the 360-3D experience on a HMD device that supports 360 degree footage. The Oculus Rift, and the HTC Vive are the two most popular HMDs.

Audio and VR

If you plan to get a HMD device, you should really invest in audio. A pair of good headphones, and a good sound card can create a very realistic virtual surround sound. All sound, even stereo will sound like it’s coming from speakers located all around your room.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO 250‘s, and an Asus Xonar DX sound card, and everything I listen to sounds like it’s coming from speakers around my office.
